ON AIR – 1960’s BLACK Radio In Birmingham Documentary
February 5, 2010
Red Carpet Premiere at the Alabama Theater

As part of the NAACP Centennial Celebration, ON AIR 1960’s BLACK Radio In Birmingham premieres to the audience that lived the struggle.

1960’s Black radio was the voice and soul of a people, delivering information and comfort during a time of both trial and triumph.

The documentary began as a personal diary but as more incredible stories unfolded, the diary evolved into a full length documentary. Coded messages and specific songs provided the platform that was according to Dr Richard Arrington, former Mayor Birmingham and a beneficiary of Black Radio, “a king maker”.

Walt Williams, Chairman of the Alabama Broadcasters Association says, “this story must be told because it is who we are as a City and demonstrates the power of media to inform and inspire”.

Interviews and features include:

  • Dr. Richard Arrington, Jr.
  • Congressman Spencer Bachus
